Consumer Reports has not rated this set yet. Their current top rated set is the samsung ln650, which although good, has minor flaws, such as “3-ball effect” (tennis and football), varying shade of green on football fields when comparing line of scrimmage versus either side, and some smudginess.

I see none of that with UN46B8000 that I bought last week. Fast motion is excellent. White is white, black is black, and reds and blues are beautiful. Clarity is excellent. Once in a while I’ve seen intense yellows and greens where I’ve wondered if it was an accurate depiction, but I’ve not made any adjustments yet. But, it’s hard to get all these qualities, especially whites, in plasma. I’m not a professional, just my observations based on a few months of shopping.

My opinion is that plasma has lost it’s advantage, especially if you consider power consumption. Plasmas only advantage now is price, but that should change over time.

The only problem with the un46b800 I’ve had is that occasionally the backlight setting jumps up. I think c/net mentioned this. Still, I’m very satisfied with this set.

I love the set. it’s extremely thin, and I the color is brilliant. I haven’t noticed much flashlighting, triple ball effect, or other problems which effect most standard LCD sets. If you’re relying on factory settings for picture quality, you should seriously go to [...]

Do not use the slim wall mount if you have one. It’s magnetic and causes some problems w/ the set.

I was able to take advantage get a steal of a price on a sale, and had to jump on it. If you have money to burn, it’s a great set. there are some 9 series standard LCD sets from Samsung which are great.

Be aware that there are no true LED sets out there. This is an edge lit set. That means that there are some LED’s along the edges of the screen providing backlight to the lcd screen. The next series, 9000, will feature local dimming LED which are spread in zones throughout the set. Not a true LED, but closer, however .. more than likely.. you’ll pay the price.

If you’re in the market for an edge lit LED-LCD set, and you’re happy w/ 46in, jump in. If not, wait it out a bit until there’s new tech you want badly, or until the prices drop.

I never write product reviews. Never. This is my first one in 13 years of using the Internet.

To put it simply, this TV is amazing. Absolutely unbelievably amazing. If you think it looks good in a show room, it really is even better once you take it home. The difference between this TV and others is that it is like watching HDTV for the first time all over again.

I unboxed the set and The Dark Knight happened to be on HBO in HD so I turned it on with high expections and it even blew those out of the water.

I could go on and on and on here but there really is not much more else you can say. Everything about this TV is perfect and it is definitely money well spent.

I purchased this 3 watt light for my Sony DCR-HC96 Mini DV camera. Without the light, the camera’s indoor performance is mediocre at best. I have to admit that I didn’t seek information from powerful when I attached this tiny light to the camera. But boy, was I despicable – The contrast is astounding! While 3 watts may not sound like a lot, it’s enough to light your subject from up to 10 feet away with no problems. I am astonished at how grand better the video is when using this in indecent light. Trace that the do quality of this light is nothing special, and it does procure extremely hot after only a few minutes of exercise. But you will be rewarded by the tall inequity it makes on your video. Overall, I’m extremely contented with my assume.

I bought this light for my DCR-DVD92, which doesn’t have any lamp integrated. Makes celebrated improves for unpleasant lightning shots. But be prepared with another than standard battery, because this light takes half of your battery’s power. I also bought NP-FP90 for it (this battery will give you 150 minutes with this light on) . Also the storage pouch is useful. Fits both: light and NP-FP90 battery.

People here are obviously confusing the different unit model #’s. The Garmin 700 series covers the 750, 760, and 770. Obviously some of these folks got the 760 and think it’s a 750. The 750, which this review space is for, is all silver, there are NOT different color choices. The 760 and 770 have a black finish around the screen. The 750 doesn’t come with bluetooth and an included traffic reciever, which doesn’t work that good at all and coverage is “spotty” at best. But for the additional $200 they’re asking for these insignificant features, I’d recommend the 750 for 200 less. The 770 is the same as the 760 but comes with both N. American AND European maps installed.

These are Garmins top of the line Nuvi’s and imo… the best portable gps’s on the market. The big difference in the 700 series over last years 600 series is the inclusion of multi-destination routing. So if you’re a delivery driver or someone that drives a different route with multiple stops each day, then the 700 series is for you. It can even optimize the stops to take the least amount of time. But if you only need to input 1 or 2 stops, then I’d go with the Nuvi 660. It has all the same features of the 760 (the one that’s $200 more than the unit covered here) minus the multi-destination routing. Meaning it has both the bluetooth and traffic reciever included for less of a price than the unit on this page. I own both units and highly recommend either one based on your needs. If you’ve never owned a gps before, let me say that it doesn’t get any more user friendly than Garmins’ Nuvi series.

On a side note… stay away from the Garmin “C” series. Yes, they may be SLIGHTLY cheaper than the Nuvi 350 or 360, but what’s inside cannot compare. The “C” series uses an outdated chip that requires direct line of site with the sky for satellite reception, meaning that tall buildings and trees WILL affect reception, and it’s calculations are nowhere near as timely as what newer units offer. Not to mention, the “C” series has much older maps and is just plain old antiquated. If you’re getting a new gps and spending hard-earned money on it, don’t get something that’s already out-dated. Whichever gps you decide on, make sure it has the SiRF chip in it. The SiRF chip is the defacto standard in the gps market by leaps and bounds. Hope I shed some light for those of you researching a new gps for the first time.

I previously had a nuvi 660 and left the unit in a rental car in Iowa. I waited to replace it until the 750 shipped at the end of last month. While I was waiting, I tried a Tom Tom and Magellon. The 750 far exceeds all of the other units. The earlier reviews give a pretty good run down on what is good about it. There are a couple of things that were not mentioned that I really like over the 660.

1. I like the feel of it better than the 660. It doesn’t have the flip up antenna and seems more streamline and fits into my shirt pocket better. 2. The mounting unit is FAR superior than the one on the 660. I have rented cars 140 times so far this year, and the different windshield slants caused problems at times with the 660. The 750 mount allows greater rotation of the GPS for better viewing.

I didn’t use the bluetooth on the 660, so I opted to not get it and purchased the 750 instead of the 760. I do disagree with an earlier review in that I greatly appreciate the traffic antenna and traffic routing. I travel mostly in major metro areas and it has helped me considerably. Fortunately when I lost my 660 I did not loose the traffic antenna or the electrical charger, both of which work on the 750. Is it worth $200? Probably not. But it has steered me around traffic jams and bridges that are out.

Also, one other neat feature that I haven’t figured any usefull purpose for yet but that I like is that it lays down a pink line showing where you have been. Kind of like laying down bread crumbs.

There is NOTHING out there that is as good as the nuvi 700 series!

I use three batteries in rotation, as I am frequently travelling in places where there is no electricity. When I traded in my old PowerShot S410 for a new PowerShot SD750 I took a chance on buying two generic batteries ($12 instead of $42).

Both generics were slightly less than perfect, in that they would regularly activate the ‘low battery’ icon/light even when they were fully charged. Occasionally, they would even evoke the ‘change battery’ message. On these occasions I had to open the battery compartment, partially remove the battery, then re-install it, in which case I could now proceed to take pictures with the same battery.

My sense was that the total battery life of the generics was not dramatically shorter than the Canon original, although I did not attempt to measure this precisely.

As soon as I was able (about a month after I bought them, as I was travelling at the time) I returned the generics to Amazon and paid full price for the Canon original. Although the generics could be ‘worked around’ it wasn’t worth it to me, as I discovered I was more interested in taking photos than in saving $30 (times 2).

This is the exact same battery that came with my Canon SD200 camera (digital elph). I wanted to have a spare, and while you can find the replacement batteries (generics) for about 1/2 the price I really didn’t want to risk anything going wrong by using any other type of battery. It takes a charge well and has a nice life to it, I am satisfied.

I recently bought this 8GB SDHC card for my Canon SD1000 camera. The card works very well and I’ve had no problems with it so far. If you’re in the market for an affordable high quality SDHC card, this may be the one for you. Sorry, I kind of sounded like a used car salesman right there, didn’t I? I assure you that I don’t work for Transcend. But, here’s why I think this card is awesome:

Pros:

-Affordable!

-Large 8GB capacity

-Class 6 read/write speed (which is the fastest speed currently available)

-Lifetime warranty (at least that’s what the package says

-Transcend is a reputable company that’s been making memory products for a very long time. ( I swear to the tech Gods that I don’t work for them!)

Cons:

- I can’t think of any right now. The closest thing to a “Con” that I can think of is that if you buy this card now, it will probably become cheaper in a month or so No, make that 2 weeks.

IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT SDHC MEMORY CARDS:

-SDHC cards are not compatible with most older SD cameras, SD devices, or SD card readers.

-SDHC cards are rated by speed using different “classes”. There are currently three data transfer speed classes available for SDHC cards. These classes are “class 2, class 4, and class 6″. For example, “Class 2″ would have the slowest read/write speed while “Class 6″ has the fastest read/write speed. So if you have a device in which speed may play a crucial role, make sure you buy a higher “class” SDHC card. Again, this SDHC card has the fastest read/write speed available right now. Class 6 has a minimum read/write speed of 6mb/sec… while Class 2 has minimum speed rating of 2mb/sec, and Class 4 is 4mb/sec. Starting to see the pattern?

SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “SD CARDS” AND “SDHC CARDS?

SDHC is basically an upgrade to the older SD cards. The reason they upgraded it was to achieve greater data transfer speeds AND capacity than previously possible with normal SD cards… and to do this, they had to redesign the card (which is why it’s not compatible with normal SD devices). This was necessary because digital cameras and digital video cameras these days have higher resolutions, which equate to larger file sizes and faster data transfer needs.

I hope I haven’t confused everybody by going into this much detail, but I can’t help being the nerd that I am. If you are confused, don’t hesitate to comment on this post and I will try my best to answer your questions. Also, any feedback is always welcome!

Conclusion: Buy the card if you have a new device that uses SDHC. It rocks! (This message has been approved by the “Duke of New Mexico”)

I recently purchased a Canon Powershot A720IS digital camera that is capable of recognizing and using up to 2 TERRABYTES of memory card (in the future) so I wanted to get the largest memory card I could install for now. I wanted to use the camera both on dry land and with an underwater housing for shooting stills and video on dive trips. Camera specs said an 8 GB SDHC card would record one hour of hi res video at 30 fps. Or nearly 2300 hi res stills at 8 megapixels.

A test of the Transcend 8GB SDHC card in the camera ended up shooting 70 minutes of full screen, 30fps digital video that could not be distinguished from my DV camcorder video quality. Playback from the memory card to the TV was so fast & efficient there was never a single “stutter” on the screen. The card speed is genuinely FAST as advertised. Low level formatting of the card allowed for very acceptable rapid-fire sequential still photo shooting speeds when light levels were bright enough that the flash was not needed/used. Something like 2 photos every 3 seconds. Files were flawless in display, both for stills and video.

This product was significantly lower in price than the Kingston 8GB SDHC card I originally bought with the camera. I’ve used both interchangeably and cannot see any different in the speed or capacity and quality of imagery is identical. For the money I’ll stick with Transcend and am looking forward to getting their 16GB card once the price drops substantially below the $100 mark. That would provide nearly 2 1/2 hours of video on my still camera or 4600 highest quality stills. I’m afraid my camcorder will be collecting dust much of the time. A big advantage to video on the card is there are NO MOVING PARTS, e.g. a mini DV tape cassette and camcorder or VCR playback unit needed to dump the video and stills to my Mac for editing and burning DVDs. I just stick the card in the MicroMate USB card reader, plug it in the computer and bingo, ready to sort thru and dump to the hard drive. Since the card is formatted by a Canon camera it automatically boots up the Canon Viewer software too. That should work the same for other brands of still cameras formatting this chip.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel American Psycho, this film tells the story of an 80’s yuppie named Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale) who works on Wall Street by day and kills people by night. Like the often misunderstood novel, the film is more of a dark social comedy than a real horror story. Bateman dresses and talks like all the other wealthy, young Wall Street crowd, and thus mistaken identity plays a big part in his getting away with gruesome murders again and again. Bateman’s own grip on reality begins to blur over time and at various times throughout the movie it’s quite obvious that Patrick’s view of reality is a sick, homicidal dream of endless torture and killing. Even when Bateman confesses at one point, no one listens or seems to care. Everyone has their own agenda and the main concern of Bateman’s friends is which extravagant restaurant to dine at next, or getting the latest and greatest business card to impress one another.

Casting Christian Bale was a brilliant choice by director Mary Harron, who almost got fired from the project because of not choosing Leonardo DiCaprio for the starring role. I honestly don’t think anyone could’ve captured Patrick Bateman’s personality more flawlessly than Bale, who gave an extraordinary, chilling performance. And casting Reese Witherspoon as the prissy, bubble-brained Evelyn, who’s engaged to Bateman but knows nothing of his psychotic, homicidal behavior, was a perfect choice. Much of the dialogue in the film is taken directly from Ellis’ book, and the horrific violence of the book was toned down considerably, with much of it taking place off camera. Many viewers don’t seem to appreciate the frequent humor in American Psycho, such as the various times Bateman says crazy things like, “I’m into murders and executions” that no one seems to hear. And his philosophical ramblings about the music of Huey Lewis & the News, Phil Collins, and Whitney Huston are hysterical!

The new “Killer Collector’s Edition” is a mixed bag as far as worthwhile special features go. The documentary “From Book to Screen” is in depth but instead of having new interviews with the stars there are mostly boring interviews with film critics. Plus, it seemed like there was way too much coverage of the novel and very little on the actual shooting of the film. There’s a lame video essay read by some singer and a documentary on the `80s. Thankfully, there are several deleted scenes (with optional director’s commentary) as well as several humorous trailers. My favorite special feature (and probably the main reason why you should by this edition) is the director’s commentary which tells lots of entertaining behind the scenes info. And, the picture and sound quality are better than ever! American Psycho IS NOT a film for everyone, but for those who enjoy intelligent satires with a little horror mixed in, this modern classic is a definite must for your DVD collection! And before you judge or even watch this movie, you should read Ellis’ novel to appreciate the whole, uncensored story.

“I like to dissect girls. Did you know I’m utterly insane?” -P. Bateman

No doubt about it, Mary Harrion’s “American Psycho” is definitely not for every taste and audience demographic. The good news is, perhaps, that the film is nowhere near as gruesome and gory as both its subject matter and its controversial nature would lead one to believe. In fact, its tone of ironic comic detachment helps to de-emphasize the more sordid aspects of the material and to instead highlight the film’s bitingly satiric message.

Set in the mid-1980’s, “American Psycho” casts a scathing eye on the then-brand new, up-and-coming group of 20-something executives known as “yuppies.” Patrick Bateman, the psycho of the title, is a man who literally seems to have everything – stunning good looks, a fantastic physique, a beautiful fiancé, a diploma from Harvard and a successful career as a Wall Street executive. Yet, alone of the young men with whom he consorts, Patrick flatly admits to us in voice-over narration that he is literally an empty-suit – that his perfectly maintained outer appearance, seemingly well-ordered social routine and empty, superficial personal relationships merely mask the moral emptiness that lurks at the core of his soul. Much of the complexity of Patrick’s character comes from the fact that he seems, paradoxically, to be both obsessed with the idea of conforming to the values of the world he lives in, and, at the same time, being strangely conscious of their unreality and meaninglessness. Thus, we see him becoming almost emotionally unglued because he fears he will not be able to reserve the proper table at a posh upscale restaurant or because he feels that one of his corporate buddies has a more impressive looking business card than he does. Much of Patrick’s madness has its roots in the kind of obsessive-compulsive paranoia that arises from the modern insistence that life should and, indeed, can be converted into a perfect, problem-free existence if one just has enough money and a sufficient amount of the right “stuff” to make it that way. Frankly admitting that he feels no emotional attachment to any other human beings, Patrick is thereby free to channel his madness into its ultimate anti-social, taboo-shattering shape and form: serial killing. Thus, as days turn to nights, Patrick begins to rack up his victims and potential victims – a homeless man, assorted prostitutes, an ex-girlfriend, an unctuous business associate, even some policemen who get wise to his activities later in the film.

Luckily for the squeamish among us, far more of the film’s running time is devoted to a comic rather than thriller mode. The brittle, dryly humorous Mary Harrion/Guinevere Turner screenplay mines the corporate world milieu and the twisted rantings of a values-free mind for all their black comedy potential. Christian Bale brings a remarkable subtlety to a touchy role, managing to seem coolly alluring, chillingly detached, touchingly pathetic and wryly amusing all at the same time. Special credit should go to the stark, almost antiseptic look the filmmakers achieve through the art direction and set design, a look that matches in visual terms the moral and emotional emptiness of the characters and their world.

Much was made of the anti-woman tone of the novel at the time of its initial release. Perhaps because the writers and the director are themselves women, the movie seems to have toned down that aspect quite a bit. Indeed, as in a movie like “In the Company of Men,” we find ourselves not so much appalled as sadly bemused by the vehemently anti-women comments uttered by Patrick and his cronies because we see what shallow losers these men really are. Harrion and Turner obviously know whereof they speak.

To reiterate, “American Psycho” may not be everyone’s cup of cinematic tea, but those looking for a sharp little satire of modern American life will find some definite rewards.

Whether we know it or not, many of us have co-workers who are just like Patrick Bateman. On the outside they exude confidence, style, and success, and they know exactly what to say and when to say it. But on the inside lurks a fragmented soul ready to snap at any given moment. Welsh actor Christian Bale, in one of the best performances you will ever see, brings to life Patrick Bateman, the Wall Street yuppie who works at Pierce & Pierce by day and is a serial killer by night. In adapting the controversial and unpleasant book by Bret Easton Ellis, director Mary Harron purges much of the violence and misogyny that made the novel one of the most despised and misunderstood pieces of literature in the last 20 years. What remains is the book’s twisted sense of humor. This isn’t a slasher film but rather a clever satire on the yuppie lifestyle of the late 1980s. Speaking in a pitch-perfect American accent that recalls a game-show host, Bale perfectly embodies his character physically and emotionally. His performance makes you simultaneously laugh at, pity, and fear Bateman. Jared Leto is also good in his brief role as Paul Allen (in the book it’s Paul Owen; why his name is changed in the film, I don’t know); Chloë Sevigny also stands out as Patrick’s timid assistant, and Reese Witherspoon shines as his clueless and self-absorbed fiancee. This is the unedited version, which has a few additional flashes of nudity in one of the sex scenes. The difference is so minimal, you’d hardly notice it, showing how uptight the MPAA can get when it comes to editing films. Nonetheless, “American Psycho” is a disturbing but clever film that was one of the best of 2000. It comes highly recommended.

LOOK WHO’S TALKING actually did very well when it came out. I think these amazon people take things too seriously or don’t have kids, or have such stressful lives they can’t enjoy any kind of humor these movies have. I even enjoyed it when it came out and i was still in elementary school. My mom enjoyed it, and she loved babies and everything that had to do with babies and kids. Parents would enjoy this movie, not all but most. I’m not even one of those “kid lovers” I like kids, but not obsessed or anything like many kid lovers are. But LOOK WHO’S TALKING is a simple comedy with many funny parts like when kirstie alley’s voice turned into a devil voice as she went into labor, because of the pain. To me, and my mom that part was hilarious and many women could relate to that because giving birth is no picnic, especially when it’s your first baby. I’ve never given birth, but i’ve heard the stories. Anyways, i also read many amazon people’s reviews about how horrible look who’s talking too was, i’m thinkin’ what is wrong with people nowadays? That was a cute movie too, the baby girl was as cute as a button, and the acting wasn’t bad. I dont understand that. And at the end when mikey took his baby sisters’s hand and they walked, and you could see her wobbling, and that cute baby walk which is so cute words can’t describe, and the song i got you babe added to the moment. What’s not to love, that was an adorable ending all i could say was AWWWWWW!!! people need to lighten up, especially if you wanna be good parents. Try to enjoy life, and not take things so seriously. These movies were basically about that. All those little funny and heartwarming moments when your kid is born and starts to grow and learn. But LOOK WHO’S TALKING NOW i must agree with the others because it was horrible. It doesn’t make sense frankly, the first two films were about talking babies, why go to dogs? I like dogs and everything buy WHY? It’s almost embarassing to watch. Kind of absurd and yes the acting was horrific, and cheeesy script, and everything in the film was flat out stupid. What next talking furniture and appliances lol. But the first two are still great films, and john travolta is one of my favorite actors, and elias koteas who was in number two was funny, like he was in some kind of wonderful.

“Look Who’s Talking” is probably my favorite film with Kirstie Alley, my favorite film with John Travolta (though “Grease” comes close) and my favorite film with Bruce Willis (though I’m not exactly a fan of his). It’s funny, it’s romantic, it’s got some innovative special effects, a couple of car chases, and John Travolta even gets to fly a plane (which he must have really enjoyed at the time!).

Kirstie Alley plays Mollie, an accountant who has an office affair with one of her clients (George Segal), and ends up getting pregnant. It wasn’t planned, and she’s a little ashamed of the source, but Mollie soon warms to the idea of having a baby. After a traumatic day late in the preganacy, Mollie goes into labor in the middle of the bustling streets of New York, and takes a cab driven by the easy going James (John Travolta). Though it’s not really what he wants to do (he wants to be a pilot) he’s very good at driving a cab, and gets Mollie there very quickly. She has the baby, Mikey, and he’s something of a thinker (voice/thoughts spoken by Bruce Willis), wondering to himself what this strange world around him is, and who these strange people around him are. He starts to grow up as time goes on, and Mollie decides to look for a father. She made a mistake, and she owes it to Mikey to find him a Dad. She dates here, she dates there, but could the right Dad be staring her in the face this whole time?

Everyone plays their part well, and the plot flows really nicely, bit of action, bit of a thoughtful moment, bit of a laugh. It’s a romatic comedy of sorts, and it’s a funny look at early motherhood, it’s interesting seeing both happening at the same time. It’s one of those films I can watch again and again, and have done over the years. The soundtrack is great too, a mixture of some older pop hits and contemporary 1980s tunes (including “Dumb Things” by Australian musician Paul Kelly during the taxi labor scene, a song I really like).

Overall, it’s a sweet and funny little film, a definitely worth a look for fans of anyone in it. Recommended.

THIS movie is a classic! Mollie (Kirstie Alley) accidentally becomes pregnant by the wrong man. Seeing that a relationship with the real father just won’t work out, she goes on a search to find a suitable father for her new son, Mikey. While she’s going out searching for the right one, her babysitter, James (John Travolta), has the time of his life watching over Mikey. Could James possibly be more than a babysitter, or is there a better man?

That’s one of the best things about “Look Who’s Talking”. Kirstie Alley and John Travolta have great chemistry together, and they, along with the baby, make this movie a classic that I’ll never forget. The movie takes turns following Mollie around as she meets a bunch of Mr. Wrongs while she tries to find Mr. Right, and Mikey, who has Bruce Willis telling us all what Mikey’s thinking throughout the movie.

“Look Who’s Talking” has several parts that you’ll probably remember for the rest of your life once you see them, such as the opening sequence that shows hundreds of creatures inside the body talking to each other as they race for the endzone, and my favorite, the part where the song “Walking on Sunshine” plays as James shows Mikey how to dance.

That brings me to another point. “Look Who’s Talking” has a GREAT soundtrack. From the upbeat “Walking on Sunshine”, to the overly catchy “Let My Love Open the Door”, you might find yourself jamming along to some of the tunes while both hemispheres of your brain work together to form your overall opinion of the movie itself.

If you ask me, I say that “Look Who’s Talking” is one of the best movies of the late 80’s, and I’d even go so far as saying it’s one of the best in its genre. It’s funny, it has good drama and acting, and it’s entertaining from start to finish. What more can you ask for? Get it now!

I agree with the other reviewers. Just a breath of fresh air and uplifting. I also needed a feel-good movie and it delivers. All actors are brilliant and it’s just so amazing to see them move and mature..and grow. A bit of therapy perhaps for the self as well. Great movie for anyone.

Was having a hard day and this movie just made me smile; that kind of smile that warms you up and lasts. It’s not a ‘chick flick’, it’s a movie for everyone; about growing up. How many times I’ve looked for something to fill an emptiness… only to find that the ‘real good stuff’ comes when you let go and take the leap of faith, follow your heart, etc. I can think of many loved ones I would recamend this movie to.

I give it five stars because for the message it’s meant to give, for the beauty in which it portrays that message, just the fun of it, it was perfect! That says a lot! Watch it!!!

As a child, what I loved best about Curious George was his absolute inability to resist temptation, especially if fun was involved. His curiousity got him into all sorts of trouble and I got a vicarious thrill out of watching him get out of trouble and have everything turn out all right, but not without a lot of action and suspense and humor first.

What kid can’t relate to the constant struggle between following the rules and testing the boundaries.?

Luckily, this movie stays true to the spirit of the classic books and it features a stellar cast, including Drew Barrymare and Will Ferrell. They do fine in their roles.

DO keep in mind that this movie is NOT designed to entertain adults (as Shrek did) There aren’t the clever “in” jokes and the animation is a bit strange at times. Also, there are updates such as cell phones (not around when Curious George was created).

But the spirit of the series remains intact. At the theatre where I saw the film, the younger members of the audience were laughing wildly. The older ones weren’t nearly as thrilled. It really is aimed at a younger age group.

With those aspects in mind, it’d be the perfect family film for those with young children.

Curious George is a delightful book and a delightful movie. That the two don’t match up very well is a testament to changing times I think, and not because the creators of the movie didn’t care about preserving the original. But before I get into that I will review the movie as it stands on its own.

The “man with the yellow hat” (nicely voiced by Will Farrel) is a museum docent who cares passionately about his work and wants to communicate his love of history and the natural world to a disinterested city. It seems that the museum is failing financially, and destined to soon become a parking lot unless he and the owner can come up with a grand new attraction to bring in the money. So the man with the yellow hat buys the latest in adventure clothing and sets out to Africa on a mission to find a gigantic idol for their exhibit. He finds George instead (a very good little monkey, but extremely curious). George stows away on the ship headed back to America, and there he creates a lot of mischief and fun. The man with the yellow hat is at a loss about what to do with his new little friend, but soon learns to appreciate the little monkey and learns from his insatiable curiosity to stop worrying and enjoying life more.

We are Curious George fans (my household includes a 4 and 7-year old to whom I have read these books many times before bed). I thought the movie was sweet and innocent, done in a simpler animation style with soft washes of bright color that stayed fairly true to the feeling of the illustrations from the books. This entranced my four year old: the seven year old was bored, as I might have expected. After all, the books were meant more for the pre-K ages.

Speaking of innocence, you might have guessed from my summary that the movie took HUGE liberties with the plot. In its defense, imagine movie audiences of today reacting to some guy showing up in Africa, dropping a monkey into a sack and hauling him off to America to live in his house largely unsupervised. Then imagine that the monkey accidentally dials the Fire Department, which shows up and arrests him for false alarm, taking him to a prison infested with rats. When the books were written what, 50 years ago? this may have seemed more plausible. Not today, by a long shot! So you see how there had to be a major rewrite for this to work as a movie in 2006.

I thought this was a fun film to see with your 2-5 year old child, but perhaps too simple for older kids unless they are rabid Curious George fans to begin with. We will probably rent or buy the DVD when it becomes available later this year.

-Andrea, aka Merribelle

I thought the movie was a breath of fresh air in an era of overhyped computer-animated “cartoons” full of in-jokes and sarcasm. This was a real cartoon- gently animated, slowly paced, and written for kids. No snarky sarcasm, no annoying talking animals, no ridiculous violence, just a sweet tale told so that it could be enjoyed by all ages. There is nothing to scare a very young child, and children will not come away with rude comments that they learned from it. It is what movies for kids should have always been.

The plot is slightly pointless, but the plot really isn’t the point anyway. The real point is how cute George is, and how nice it is to watch him being curious. The songs are sweet and not too loud or jarring. All of mine, from ages 2 up to 7, liked the movie, and it kept their attention without making them anxious. I wish I could give it six stars.

The quote is really a quote from the movie…from father to son.

To be sure the acting in this movie is very good with quirky memorable characters and quotes. This will no doubt fall into the cult dark comedy classic arena along with such films as Heathers and Sour Grapes to name a couple. Of course this is only my opinion.

What really endeared me to the film is Robin Williams’ character is a long time writer who has never published anything more than a couple of greeting cards. At some point in this movie he gets a big cosmic break…but as a writer I had to ask myself: Would I do the same? Would desperation to be published guide me down his path?

Maybe.

I’d highly recommend this movie to any other aspiring-to-be-published writer as it will surely become a long-lived discussion topic amongst that group.

Oh, did I mention it was filmed in Seattle?? And done in just a way that if you aren’t from Seattle you probably won’t be able to tell.

Overall, refreshing adult-oriented humor about the woes of loving an abhorrent child at the same time as struggling through one’s hateful life.

I caught the free preview of this film on HDNET and really didn’t know what to expect. Robin Williams plays a writer/teacher who lives with his teenage son. He wants to be published and his poetry course is in danger of being dropped. The story is full of strange but believable characters who are in William’s and or his son’s lives. I liked this film for being different and I found the performances to be true and insightful.

World’s Greatest Dad hooked me the first time I read about it debuting at Sundance. I heard, “dark comedy,” and, “Robin Williams,” and was instantly interested. Then the trailer and plot summary really reeled me in. The result is a film that not only surpassed expectations, but also went in an unexpected direction. When a film is described as a dark comedy, it has usually still stuck to specific guidelines. Maybe it still followed a similar formula to what other comedies did before it. These other films that are labeled as dark comedies don’t really break any new ground. World’s Greatest Dad goes beyond that. It breaks any ground rules that were laid before it and doesn’t follow any sort of formula. When they say, “dark,” they aren’t kidding. The subject content is pretty disturbing yet is somehow still humorous.

Robin Williams plays the role of a dad who’s trying to do his best with the obstacles life has thrown at him incredibly well. With everything that’s going on in his life, even in the moments of the film where he doesn’t speak, it looks like he’s constantly thinking about something. Always dwelling on what’s going on around him with the people who are close to him in his life and trying to decide how he’s going to handle this situation he’s gotten himself into. While his role does show a bit of his comedic side, Robin Williams proves he can handle serious roles rather well with this performance.

While I obviously can’t say much about what direction the film goes in without completely spoiling the film, I will say that the trailer does a good job of not giving any of that away. Once the film makes that turn though, it really follows through with it and doesn’t let up. One of the best parts of the experience of watching this film for the first time is seeing how far the concept of the film is going to go. As Lance buries himself in this, people begin to say the actions that were taken changed their life for the better. If you told a lie that did that to not just one person, but practically an entire high school…how would you tell them the truth?

World’s Greatest Dad is not going to be for everyone. Some people will love it and others will just downright hate it. The film isn’t just dark, it’s DARK. That and it’s a very different kind of comedy with an unexpected turn of events. Most of the humor is very dry, so if that’s not your thing then I wouldn’t recommend it. For me personally though, it’s one of the most interesting films I’ve seen in quite some time.
